What is an AI film?

The short answer

An AI film is a movie, series episode or short whose pictures, and often its sound, were generated by artificial intelligence instead of being filmed with a camera or animated by hand. A filmmaker writes the story, describes each shot, picks the best results and edits them together. The AI models do the rendering: turning a written description, a still image or a rough sketch into moving footage.

How it differs from CGI and animation

Traditional CGI and animation are built frame by frame by artists using 3D software. AI video models learn from huge amounts of existing footage and then generate new shots on request, in seconds or minutes. That makes it possible for one person, or a tiny team, to produce scenes that would have needed a studio a few years ago: battles, alien worlds, period drama, creature horror.

Who makes AI films

Most AI films today come from independent creators and small studios who publish on YouTube, Vimeo, Instagram and TikTok. Some are experimental shorts made for festivals and competitions, others are ongoing series with recurring characters, and a growing number are feature-length. On AI Film Flix every title is credited to the person or studio who made it, and plays from their own upload.

The tools behind them

Popular AI video tools include Runway, OpenAI's Sora, Google's Veo, Kling, Luma, Pika, Hailuo, Seedance and Higgsfield, usually combined with image generators such as Midjourney, AI voice and music tools, and a normal video editor. You can browse films by the tool they were made with on our AI films by tool page.

Is an AI film really a film?

The storytelling decisions are still human: the idea, the script, the casting of looks and voices, the pacing, the edit. What changes is how the images are produced. Like every new filmmaking tool, from sound to digital cameras, AI is being used for everything from quick experiments to serious, personal work. The best of it is worth watching on its own merits.
