Once you take something for granted you no longer cherish it the way you should be and that happens don't be surprised when it one day disappears. Give someone a reason to stay and they will, but give them enough reason to leave that's exactly what is going to happen. Elena should have been his number one, but by letting someone else be number one he made it clear that she wasn't his priority and he realized that far too late. And once things are broken beyond repair they stay broken.
