I personally believe it was mental health issues that were happening that they would have no way of knowing about back then. Many psychiatric conditions such as Borderline Personality Disorder, Intermittent Explosive Disorder, and others have the same symptoms of having fits of frustration causing the person to scream and throw things and act violently or at least, cause them to thrash their body around. Many of these patients also suffer from schizophrenia which would explain the "spectral" sightings as well.
