Is 32GB of unified memory enough to run local AI on a Mac mini M6? Apple's numbers look great — up to 4x faster AI than M4 and 4.8x faster prompt processing in LM Studio — but the number that actually decides whether you can run anything is the memory ceiling. M6 tops out at 32GB

Well, the biggest problem that I see is the extremely small bandwidth.

Two factors when chasing a device to run your local Ai: one is memory get as much as you can afford but note, 36 gig isn’t great . Two is you need memory bandwidth. Mac mini doesn’t cut it. No use if Mac memory is in abundance but your bandwidth can’t handle it. It will be too slow for what you need . So max out your memory and add lots of extra to handle your context your feeding the model and pair that with max bandwidth.

At the very least get m5 pro with 64gb if you want to do any real work, 27-32B models + their context window requires nearly 48gb of ram, and if you take OS overhead and such into account you definitely will need more than 48gbs
64gb is the sweet spot

tbh this is a great deal for anyone who wants to use qwen models but because ram isn't upgradable it's kind of a double edged sword

I need 128GB of unified memory. My current mini only has 16GB.
