That opening on the stormy river grabbed me — the egg glowing in the dark water, and then the way she just takes it aboard without hesitation. The shot of her hands on the bamboo pole, poling the boat across grey water all alone, tells her whole lonely story without a single word of dialogue. And the little fish! It becomes this quiet symbol of the family she's slowly building around herself. This is exactly the kind of melancholy, slow-burn dark fantasy I love. About to watch The Other Child next.

“The River Mother” is such a haunting title. It sounds like the kind of dark fantasy where the river isn’t just a place — it feels ancient, alive, and waiting for someone to make the wrong choice.
